The Wonky Food Company goes on sale in The Co-op8th Jun, '18
The Wonky Food Company has secured its first listing with a major retailer, launching its range of three relishes in The Midcounties Co-operative’s flagship stores in Bourton-on-the-Water and Chipping Norton. The new products will form part of The Midcounties Co-operative Food’s ‘Best of Our Counties’ range, which champions over 800 food and drink products locally sourced from Oxfordshire and neighbouring counties.
The launch took place at the award-winning Bourton-on-the-Water store, recently chosen as the only supermarket in England to make it into grocery research organisations IGD’s ‘Top Stores to See in Europe’. The chief executive of The Midcounties Co-operative, Phil Ponsonby, along with other board members attended the launch, which also saw local students bearing protest banners demanding “Equal Rights for all Fruit and Veg”.
The relishes are made from imperfect and surplus fruit and vegetables that would otherwise fall out of the food chain. The initial flavours include Chilli Tomato, Hot Pepper and Lime, and Tangy Onion, but there are plans for many more products across different food categories.
Ashley Cavers, co-founder of the Wonky Food Co, said: “We’ve come a long way since we started wanting to combat food waste and provide a delicious, versatile product for consumers, who are increasingly more concerned not just with quality but with the provenance and sustainability of their food.
“We’re hugely grateful to The Midcounties Co-operative for supporting us throughout our journey to being sold on shelves - they used to supply us with surplus produce when we were just in our early stages. We are looking forward to working with them on future products as we expand and grow.”
The new range will form part of The Midcounties Co-operative Food’s ‘Best of Our Counties’ range, which showcases the best food and drink from local suppliers.
Matt Fletcher, direct sourcing manager at The Midcounties Co-operative Food, said: “The Best of Our Counties range is all about celebrating the fantastic food and drink available in our communities and supporting the talented local suppliers behind the products.”
